For forty years Kazuyuki Ohtsu (Japanese, b. 1935) served as assistant to Kiyoshi Saito, a woodblock artist at the forefront of the sosaku hanga movement and a man Ohtsu revered as "Master." Breaking with the traditional division of labor practiced by the shin hanga (new prints) artists, the sosaku hanga (creative prints) artists handled every step of production-painting the original pictures, carving the woodblocks, and printing the images.
