Fact check: Misleading data used in claim alleging a global cooling trend
The claim: Global temperature has decreased at a rate of nearly 1 degree Celsius per decade since 2015
Average global temperatures have risen by roughly 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Other long-term climate data corroborate that finding.
But on social media, some claim NOAA data actually show global cooling since 2015.
"NOAA Data Shows We Are Not Going to Die From Climate Change After All," reads a Feb.
15 Facebook post. "Global temperature is getting colder over the past 85 months at a rate of 0.9 degrees Celsius per decade."
The post features a bar chart that appears to use NOAA data showing monthly temperatures between January 2015 and January 2022.
